Films of the Arab World: Paradise Now

In the Arabic Novel seminar, Professor Allen recommended several films that there wasn’t time to see in class.  I’m planning to watch them before school starts, and I’ll post my responses here.

Paradise Now was my starting point.  It depicts two young Palestinian men who are good friends, marginally employed, and utterly bored with their lives.  They get recruited as suicide bombers, but their zeal is rather unsteady.  They’re really sympathetic characters, especially the one who wavers the most.  It’s heartbreaking to hear him talk about being born in a refugee camp and being allowed only once, at the age of six, to leave the West Bank.   What an excellent opportunity to gain some insight into that disturbing role of suicide bombers in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
