To Bangalore and Rajkot!

I’m looking for people who have been to Rajkot or know something about Gujarat province in India.  That’s where I’ll be going in early July with the Teachers for Global Classrooms program.  Here’s the plan:

On June 30, I’ll fly to Bangalore and spend four days there to learn about the country, the culture, the educational system.  Then I’ll travel to Rajkot in Gujarat province to visit S. N. Kansagara School. Lisa Collins of Neville High School in Monroe, LA will be my travel partner, and Mala Singh will be our host teacher.

Of course, I’ve been pouring over web sites.  The school in Rajkot province is part of the Galaxy Education System.  As best I can tell, it’s a regional network of innovative schools. Their web site emphasizes “excellence for every child and every staff member” and creative use of technology.  It also offers a lot of different tracks, preparing students for the International Baccalaureate exams (IB), the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE).  Languages of instruction are Hindi, Gujarati, and English.  Here are a few other interesting points on the web site:

  • Nondiscrimination policy (I’m wondering if that’s standard in India)
  • Admissions process includes “…a need to ascertain whether we will be able to meet any special needs of the student (including physical handicaps, learning disabilities, and development of English-language skills)…”
  • 225 student – teacher contact days!  School year starts in mid-June, so they’ll be just 3 weeks into it when we arrive.

Hoping to learn more soon…

Exciting plan! What is taught in English? The kids are at least 45 days smarter than ours in the same curriculum. Will look forward to your blogging the facts of the matter. Bobbie

Thanks, Bobbie. Good to hear from you. I’ve sent a message to my host teacher and hope to hear back before long. Their school year runs June to April, so she might be on vacation.
